Ensure that you display affection outnumbering any consequences or punishments. Attention and appreciation can motivate your toddler to follow instructions and be on the line. Hugs, kisses and good-natured gestures and words will reassure your love for your child strongly. Also, it is not advisable to burden with rules and that may frustrate your toddler and can set off anger or mischief alarm.
Your toddler might misbehave because he/she does not understand or cannot do what you are asking for. It is important to dance to their tunes to reduce tantrums and misbehavior. Let’s say instead of saying “Stop hitting” try suggesting “Hitting makes people sad”. It is not necessary to overreact when your toddler says ‘NO’. Instead, you can try making the activity more fun and make a game out of good behavior. And you cannot be always negative nodding and that can make your toddler frustrated. It is ok to say ‘YES’ sometimes and a little mess can be for good. It is better to avoid the frustration that may trigger tantrums. Communicate with your toddler and teach few words to express feelings and if your child is not speaking yet, consider encouraging baby sign language.
Toddlers will break the limits at some point despite your best efforts and in such times; ignore displays of anger such as crying. But if your child hits, kicks or screams for a long time then encourage your child to co-operate and explain on the consequences that triggered by their actions. If your child breaks a toy, tell that he or she won’t have the toy anymore to play with. Try withholding privileges such as their favorite toy if your child doesn’t behave.
Whatever consequences you choose, be consistent. Make sure that every adult who cares for your child observes the same rules and discipline guidelines. This reduces your child’s confusion and need to test you.
It is in the hands of parents to set a positive example for children and always have in mind that your kids grow watching you and is more prone to adapt behavior, attitude and habits from parents. So, it is important to cultivate good habits and behavior in your children and prior parents should be a positive role-model themselves.
